CHAPTER ONE SCENE 1: REMOTE RESEARCH STATION — INTERIOR [AMBIENCE: Wind against insulated walls, low electrical hum of equipment racks] NARRATOR The station had been silent for eleven days before Elara stopped counting. [BEAT] NARRATOR Not silent the way a library is silent. Silent the way a held breath is silent. [SFX: A desk chair rolling across concrete floor] ELARA (quietly, to herself) There it is again. [SFX: Static crackle from a receiver, then — beneath it — a faint rhythmic pulse] NARRATOR It wasn't in any of the logs. She'd checked three times. Whatever was riding the 1.4 gigahertz band had no business being there — that frequency was protected. Reserved. Theoretically empty. [BEAT — 3 SECONDS] ELARA (almost a whisper) You're not supposed to exist. [SFX: Pen scratching across paper as she begins writing] NARRATOR She wrote down the time. Then the frequency. Then, after a long moment, a single word she couldn't quite explain. [BEAT] NARRATOR Alive.
